Victor Osimhen — Eighth Place (2023)
Victor Osimhen holds the highest Ballon d’Or finish by a Nigerian player in the men’s category, having placed eighth in 2023 following a remarkable campaign with Napoli.
The Super Eagles striker played a key role in Napoli’s Serie A title triumph in the 2022/23 season, scoring 26 league goals to finish as the division’s leading scorer.
His performances helped Napoli win their first Italian league title since 1990 and established Osimhen among Europe’s leading forwards. His eighth-place finish remains a landmark achievement for Nigerian football.
Nwankwo Kanu — 11th Place (1996)
Former Nigeria captain Nwankwo Kanu finished 11th in the 1996 Ballon d’Or rankings after an impressive period with Ajax.
Kanu was also a central figure in Nigeria’s historic run to the men’s football gold medal at the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games. The Dream Team became the first African side to win Olympic gold in men’s football.
His achievements with Ajax and Nigeria cemented his reputation as one of the country’s most celebrated footballers. Kanu was nominated for the Ballon d’Or again in 1999.
Ademola Lookman — 14th Place (2024)
Ademola Lookman finished 14th in the 2024 Ballon d’Or rankings after an outstanding season with Atalanta and the Super Eagles.
His defining moment came in the UEFA Europa League final, where he scored a hat-trick in Atalanta’s 3-0 victory over Bayer Leverkusen. The result secured Atalanta’s first major European trophy and ended Leverkusen’s unbeaten run across competitions that season.
Lookman also played an important role in Nigeria’s run to the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, which was held in 2024. His performances earned him recognition among the world’s leading players and made him the second Nigerian in two years to finish inside the Ballon d’Or top 15.
Finidi George — 21st Place (1995)
Former Super Eagles winger Finidi George finished 21st in the 1995 Ballon d’Or rankings following his contributions to Ajax’s success.
Finidi was part of the Ajax team that won the UEFA Champions League in 1995, defeating AC Milan in the final. He also represented Nigeria at the 1994 FIFA World Cup and was a member of the squad that won the Africa Cup of Nations that year.
Known for his pace, crossing ability and attacking contributions, Finidi was an influential figure in Nigerian football during the 1990s.
Nigeria’s Ballon d’Or Legacy
The achievements of Osimhen, Kanu, Lookman and Finidi demonstrate Nigeria’s continuing presence in the history of the Ballon d’Or.
Although none of these players has won the men’s award, their rankings represent significant individual recognition in a competition that brings together leading footballers from across the world.
Osimhen’s eighth-place finish in 2023 remains Nigeria’s best result in the men’s category, while Lookman’s 14th-place finish in 2024 extended the country’s recent presence among the award’s highest-ranked nominees.
Their accomplishments provide a benchmark for emerging Nigerian talents seeking recognition at the highest level of the game.
