The 1,000 teachers recruited by the Rivers State Government in 2023 under the Universal Basic Education Board have held a thanksgiving service after waiting three years for their employment to be fully implemented.
The service took place on Sunday, October 11, 2026, at Lynn Chancel and Towers Mission, Rumuesara, Eneka, Port Harcourt.
Delivering the sermon, former RSUBEB Chairman, Venerable Dr. Fyneface Akah, commended Governor Siminalayi Fubara for directing the issuance of employment letters and payment of outstanding entitlements following the delay.
Akah also acknowledged former Governor Nyesom Wike for approving the recruitment and current RSUBEB Chairman, Barrister Sam Ogeh, for pursuing its implementation.
He urged the newly employed teachers to remain committed to their duties, avoid misconduct and prioritise the education and welfare of their pupils.

The former chairman also called for the separation of basic education from tertiary and vocational education in the state’s administrative structure.
Speaking on behalf of the teachers, Comrade Gospel Orlukwu said the thanksgiving was organised to express gratitude to God for the successful conclusion of their long wait.
The teachers presented gifts, including rice, a goat and one hundred thousand naira, to the church in appreciation.
The service also featured a moment of silence for two colleagues who died during the period of uncertainty surrounding the recruitment.
