Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni has admitted that replacing Lionel Messi will be impossible following the legendary forward’s retirement from international football.
Messi brought the curtain down on his remarkable Argentina career after inspiring La Albiceleste to a 3-0 victory over Benin Republic on Wednesday.
The 39-year-old marked his final appearance in style, scoring once and providing two assists as Argentina celebrated a fitting farewell for their captain.
Speaking after the match, Scaloni reflected on Messi’s impact and acknowledged that the national team must now begin a new era without one of the greatest players in football history.
The Argentina coach was also asked about his own future, with his current contract approaching its final months.
“If all goes to plan, I will continue as Argentina manager,” Scaloni said.
“It has been a pleasure and a privilege to manage Leo Messi.”
Scaloni revealed that Argentina will now focus on integrating a new generation of players as they prepare for life after their talisman.
“We will now build with new talents and young players. We will look at new ways,” he added.
Despite his confidence in Argentina’s future, the World Cup-winning coach admitted that Messi’s presence and influence are irreplaceable.
“I have never seen such an aura like Lionel Messi has.
“We will start a new chapter, but what Leo transmits, that is impossible to replace.”
Messi retires as Argentina’s most-capped player and one of the most successful footballers in the nation’s history, having helped lead the country to World Cup, Copa América and Finalissima glory.
While Argentina now look towards the future, Scaloni acknowledged that Messi’s legacy will continue to inspire the next generation of Albiceleste stars.
