The Emohua Local Government Council has approved the immediate desilting of the Abaka Canal in Rumuche-Emohua to remove waste blocking the free flow of water.
The Chairman of the Council, Sir Chidi Lloyd, gave the directive after inspecting the collapsed Abaka Bridge on Tuesday.
Lloyd, who was accompanied by civil engineers and environmental experts, attributed the bridge collapse to the indiscriminate dumping of refuse into the canal by residents.
He criticised the practice, saying the accumulation of waste had blocked the waterway and prevented water from passing freely through the channels provided.

The Chairman described the continued dumping of refuse as an act of indiscipline and urged residents to support efforts to maintain a clean and safe environment.
He also said the council would engage the Rivers State Government to seek appropriate intervention for the reconstruction or rehabilitation of the collapsed bridge.
Lloyd expressed concern over the renewed dumping of refuse around the Rumuakunde axis of the East-West Road.
He recalled that the council had recently deployed equipment to clear a large refuse heap from the area.
The Chairman accused some residents of frustrating the council’s sanitation efforts by returning to the area to dump waste.
He called for greater public cooperation to sustain environmental cleanliness across Emohua Local Government Area.
