The Premier League returns this weekend following a 19-day international break, with several clubs looking to reignite their campaigns as Matchweek 6 gets underway.
The 2026/27 season paused after Matchweek 5 due to FIFA’s revised international calendar, which combined the traditional September and October international windows into one extended period.
League action resumes on Saturday with defending champions Arsenal hosting newly promoted Leeds United at the Emirates Stadium.
The Gunners will be eager to bounce back from their disappointing 3-0 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion before the break. Leeds, meanwhile, have enjoyed an impressive return to the top flight under Daniel Farke and remain unbeaten after five matches.
The Yorkshire club is among only five Premier League teams yet to suffer defeat this season, matching a record they last achieved during the 2001/02 campaign.
Saturday’s schedule also features Aston Villa against Brentford, Chelsea hosting Bournemouth, Ipswich Town welcoming Fulham, and Sunderland facing Brighton & Hove Albion.
Attention will also turn to Old Trafford, where Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur meet in a fixture that could prove crucial for both sides as they seek to improve their early-season form.
Liverpool Face Perfect-Start Manchester City
The standout fixture of the weekend takes place on Sunday at Anfield, where Liverpool host league leaders Manchester City.
City have won all five of their opening league matches and sit at the top of the table, while Liverpool enter the contest with nine points from their first five games.
The clash will also feature two of the division’s most prolific forwards. Manchester City’s Erling Haaland leads the scoring charts with five goals, while Liverpool striker Alexander Isak has netted four times.
However, Liverpool have injury concerns ahead of the encounter. Isak withdrew from Sweden’s squad with a thigh problem, while Cody Gakpo returned to Merseyside after sustaining an ankle injury during international duty with the Netherlands.
Arsenal are also monitoring the fitness of Kai Havertz after the German midfielder suffered a muscle injury while away with his national team.
Matchweek Ends On Monday
The final match of the round will see Coventry City host Newcastle United on Monday night.
Coventry head into the fixture buoyed by their first victory of the season against Nottingham Forest, while Newcastle will be aiming to resume their campaign with a positive result.
With title contenders, European hopefuls and promoted clubs all returning to action, Matchweek 6 promises an intriguing restart to the Premier League season.
