The Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Hon. Dr. Gift Worlu, on Thursday October I, 2026 marked Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary with Community Development Committee (CDC) chairmen and secretaries, youth presidents, students and National Youth Service Corps members drawn from communities across the council area.
Dr. Worlu used the interactive session to call on Nigerians to remain hopeful, patriotic and committed to the collective task of building a stronger and more prosperous nation.
He said October 1 was a day to celebrate the country’s independence from colonial rule and to remember the nationalists and patriots who contributed to the struggle for freedom.
According to him, the gathering was deliberately structured to allow the government to listen directly to the people, noting that traditional ceremonies often involve noise and fanfare that can limit meaningful interaction.
Worlu acknowledged that Obio/Akpor is blessed with enormous opportunities but also faces challenges such as flooding and poverty. He stressed the need for government and residents to work together to tackle the problems.
The chairman further called for continued patriotism, unity and hope, insisting that the responsibility of building a better Nigeria rests on the collective efforts of citizens and leaders at all levels.
He drummed support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other political figures, including Rep. Kingsley Ogundu Chinda (for governor), Rt. Hon. Martin Chike Amaewhule, Hon. Emilia Lucky-Amadi and Barr. Leslie Ejekwu.
Worlu urged the people to understand what he described as the “chain draw,” explaining that effective cooperation and representation at the federal, state and local government levels could open greater opportunities and developmental benefits for Obio/Akpor.
During the session, the Youth President of Ekinigbo, Comrade Achinike Orugbogwu, drew the chairman’s attention to the flooding challenges confronting residents across the local government.
