The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Rivers State Branch, has advised residents to take heart-related symptoms seriously and seek medical care when they persist.
The association gave the advice in a message marking World Heart Day 2026, with the theme, “Don’t Miss a Beat. Don’t Trivialize a Sign.”
The statement, signed by the NMA Public Relations Officer, Dr. Duukori ThankGod, on behalf of the Chairman, Dr. (Prof.) Ureh Annabel Oparaodu, warned against ignoring signs that could indicate heart problems.
It listed breathlessness, unusual chest discomfort, unexplained fatigue and irregular heartbeat among symptoms that should not be dismissed as stress, ageing or the pressure of daily activities.

The NMA noted that cardiovascular diseases can affect people of different ages and that some warning signs may be overlooked or mistaken for less serious health conditions.
The association encouraged residents to monitor their blood pressure, blood sugar and other health indicators while being aware of factors that could increase their risk of heart disease.
It also recommended regular physical activity, healthier food choices, and avoiding tobacco use as part of efforts to maintain good heart health.
The NMA further urged residents experiencing unusual or persistent symptoms to consult qualified health professionals rather than self-medicate or ignore the signs.
The association stressed that early attention to warning signs can help protect heart health.
