The Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt has granted bail to the leader and spokesman of the Conscience of Ogoni People, Chief Gani Topba.
Justice Mohammed Turaki granted Topba bail in the sum of N10 million, with two sureties in like sum. The sureties, according to the court, must own landed property covered by a Certificate of Occupancy (C of O).
The court granted the bail on Wednesday after hearing arguments on Topba’s bail application.
When the matter came up for hearing, Topba’s counsel reminded the court of an earlier bail application which, according to him, was not opposed by the prosecution.
After listening to both parties, Justice Turaki granted the defendant bail and adjourned the case to October 12 and 13, 2026, for commencement of trial.
Topba is facing a four-count charge bordering on alleged terrorism, seizure and detention of oil wells in Ogoniland, cybercrime and other related offences.
In one of the counts, the defendant was accused of intentionally publishing a video through a computer system with the alleged intention of bullying or harassing the President-General of KAGOTE, Lesi Maol, and the leadership of the group, allegedly putting them in fear.
Topba, who is a member of the Ogoni Dialogue Committee negotiating with the Federal Government on the resumption of oil exploration in Ogoniland, had pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The court is expected to commence trial on October 12 and 13, 2026.
