IHS Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting a more sustainable, resilient and inclusive telecommunications and technology sector in Nigeria.
The company made the commitment at a stakeholder breakfast organised by the Telecommunications and Technology Sustainability Working Group (TTSWG) in Abuja, where industry stakeholders discussed strategies for strengthening sustainability across the country’s digital ecosystem.
The September 17 event, held at the Abuja Continental Hotel, brought together representatives of regulatory agencies, telecommunications companies, academia, development organisations, technology startups and other stakeholders.
A major focus of the meeting was the TTSWG’s proposed 2025–2030 Sustainability Strategy, alongside a proposed framework for measuring sustainability performance in Nigeria’s telecommunications industry. The proposals are expected to receive further input from stakeholders before consideration by the Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC).
Speaking on behalf of IHS Nigeria, its Director of Sustainability, Titilope Oguntuga, said collaboration among industry players, regulators and other stakeholders was essential to addressing the environmental, social and governance challenges facing the sector.
She noted that technology and innovation could play a significant role in developing practical solutions while strengthening the resilience of Nigeria’s digital infrastructure.
TTSWG Board Chairman, Engr. Abdu-Waya Mohammed, said the proposed strategy would provide a framework for collaboration around sustainability. Key areas include renewable energy adoption, digital inclusion, stronger governance, collaborative innovation and sustainable development.
The Chief Executive Officer of the Nigeria Climate Innovation Center, Bankole Oloruntoba, also highlighted areas covered by the working group, including sustainable energy, electronic waste management, gender and capacity development, youth participation, innovation and community development.
The proposed sustainability metrics are expected to cover energy and decarbonisation, digital inclusion and affordability, infrastructure resilience, digital integrity, governance and waste reduction.
The engagement underscores growing efforts to establish measurable sustainability standards while encouraging collaboration to support the long-term development of Nigeria’s telecommunications and technology ecosystem.
