Newly invited striker George Ilenikhena has expressed his excitement at joining the Super Eagles and hopes to make his debut for Nigeria in Friday’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Madagascar.
The Al-Ittihad forward earned his maiden call-up from head coach Éric Chelle for the crucial qualifying fixtures against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau.
Speaking at a media session in Uyo, the 20-year-old described his invitation as a proud moment and a major milestone in his career.
“It is an honour to be here. I am proud and happy to be part of this big national team, and for me, it’s a big deal,” Ilenikhena said.
The youngster also expressed his admiration for the experienced players in the squad and his eagerness to learn from them.
“I am just 20 years old, and I am here with big and already accomplished players,” he added.
Ilenikhena further praised the atmosphere within the team, revealing that he was warmly welcomed by his teammates after arriving in camp.
“The team spirit is very good. I just arrived yesterday, and I can see that everyone is together like a big family, and that’s very good,” he said.
The striker will be hoping to earn his first senior international appearance as the Super Eagles begin their quest for a place at the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which will be hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.
Nigeria will face Madagascar at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo, before travelling to take on Guinea-Bissau in their second qualifying fixture.
