Relationship Murder: The Rising Cost of Relationship Conflicts

Months after relationship disputes in Port Harcourt ended in death, another disturbing case has emerged; this time in the South-East.

In June, a woman was allegedly beaten to death by her lover in Ogbogoro, Port Harcourt, with her body reportedly abandoned alongside her two children. Just weeks later, another relationship dispute in Eneka, Obio/Akpor, reportedly ended with Caroline Sunday losing her life after an argument with her lover over allegations of infidelity.

Now, it has happened again. This time, in Enugu.

A 30-year-old man identified by police as Okpara Emmanuel has been arrested over the alleged killing of his girlfriend, Chinyere, following an argument over allegations concerning who infected whom with HIV.

According to the Enugu State Police Command, the incident happened on September 19 at the man’s residence in Olympic Layout, One-Day, Enugu. Police said Emmanuel allegedly struck Chinyere on the head with a pestle, killing her, before wrapping her remains in nylon and hiding them inside the toilet.

The case reportedly came to light after neighbours noticed an offensive smell coming from the apartment and forced their way inside. Police said Emmanuel was subsequently rescued from an angry mob and taken into custody.

During preliminary interrogation, police said the suspect confessed to the killing and claimed the argument had started over allegations that one of them had infected the other with HIV. The victim has so far been identified only as Chinyere, with police saying efforts are ongoing to trace her relatives. An investigation and autopsy are expected to establish more details.

But beyond the horror of this particular case is a question that is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore is what exactly is happening to relationships?

How does a disagreement between two people who once chose each other become a situation where one person does not make it out alive?

Infidelity. Money. Pregnancy. Jealousy. Sex. HIV. Possessiveness. Suspicion. These are all issues that can create serious conflict between couples. But none of them has to end in murder, and perhaps that is the most frustrating part.

If a relationship is no longer working, why is walking away sometimes considered harder than hurting the person?

There is a growing culture of treating relationships like ownership. Someone cheats, and the response becomes revenge. Someone wants to leave, and the other person sees it as betrayal. Someone makes an accusation, and instead of having a conversation or ending the relationship, anger takes over.

Then there are the warning signs that people sometimes ignore.

The constant threats. The unexplained bruises. The controlling behaviour. The partner who always wants to know where the other person is. The person who becomes violent during arguments and later apologises. The person who says, “If you leave me, you will regret it.”

These things are often dismissed as ordinary relationship problems until the argument becomes the last one.

Of course, not every troubled relationship becomes violent, and these cases cannot be used to conclude that one gender is inherently more violent than the other. But the repeated reports of lovers allegedly killing, seriously assaulting or attempting to harm their partners deserve more than another cycle of social-media outrage.

Why are people staying in relationships where they are constantly afraid? Why are friends and relatives sometimes aware of dangerous behaviour but reluctant to intervene? Why do some people believe jealousy is proof of love and possessiveness is protection?

And perhaps most importantly, why has “leave the relationship” become such a difficult option?

Relationships can end. People can disappoint each other. People can cheat. People can lie. People can discover that they are simply not good for each other. All of those things can hurt, but they are still problems that can have an ending without someone dying.

The disturbing cases from Port Harcourt and now the latest case in Enugu are reminders that sometimes the most dangerous moment in a relationship is not when two people fall in love, but when one of them decides they would rather destroy the other person than let the relationship end.
