The Amanyanabo of the Source, Alhaji Mujahid Abubakr Dokubo-Asari, has raised concerns over what he describes as the marginalization and neglect of host communities under OML 18. The traditional ruler spoke on Tuesday during a courtesy visit from Major General A. A. Idris, Coordinator of the Joint Intelligence and Monitoring Centre for Operation DELTA SAFE, South South, at his palace in Obuama.
Also known as Dabaye Amakiri, the monarch voiced frustration over the lack of jobs, infrastructure, and other tangible benefits for communities hosting oil operations, despite the wealth extracted from their environment. He declared, “I cannot be leading poor people in the midst of wealth.”
Drawing a comparison to highlight the region’s strategic value, he likened the Cawthorne Channel’s importance to that of the Strait of Hormuz, cautioning that continued neglect of host communities could threaten peace, security, and oil production in the area.
He called for closer cooperation between government, security agencies, oil companies, traditional rulers, and host communities to ensure fairness, inclusion, and sustainable peace across the Niger Delta.
