Teachers and education stakeholders across Nigeria’s 774 Local Government Areas (LGAs) are being targeted under a proposed artificial intelligence training initiative by the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) and GMind Academy.
The initiative, disclosed by GMind AI co-founder and Chief Executive Officer, Dr Success Ojo, during a courtesy visit to the TRCN in Abuja, is designed to improve access to practical AI knowledge among teachers and education professionals across the country.
Under the proposal, GMind Academy would train 774 AI Adoption Specialists, with one specialist assigned to each LGA. The specialists are expected to serve as local AI champions, helping teachers and schools understand and apply artificial intelligence to teaching, learning, assessment, productivity and other educational activities.
Ojo said the training would be provided free of charge, while each participant would receive two months of complimentary access to the GMind AI platform. The access is intended to allow participants to gain practical experience and demonstrate how AI tools can be applied within educational settings.
The GMind Academy chief also proposed that teachers who complete its Certified AI-ready Teacher Programme (CART) could receive recognised professional development credits towards their continuing professional development requirements with TRCN.
However, such credits would be subject to approval by the Council and applicable regulatory requirements.
The proposal comes as education authorities increasingly focus on digital skills and the responsible use of emerging technologies in Nigerian schools. TRCN has also been developing AI-related initiatives, including work on standardised lesson plans that could support an AI-powered system for generating classroom resources.
The proposed LGA-based model is intended to take AI training beyond major cities and establish local support for teachers and schools across the country.
If approved and implemented, the initiative could create a nationwide network of trained AI adoption specialists while giving educators greater access to practical knowledge on using artificial intelligence in the classroom.
