Rivers United suffered a costly away points in Sunday’s high decibel Nigeria Premier Football League in Lafia. The Pride of Rivers grabbed the lead on the road in a game packed with entertainment, but Nasarawa United fought back to find an equaliser late in the day to keep the points shared.
Rivers United began to dominate the game in the second half, and took the lead in the 67th minute through an own goal caused by a defensive blunder by Nasarawa United.
That goal gave Rivers United a 1-0 lead which they carried comfortably for more than 20 minutes to the final third of the game.
And Rivers United seemed content with hanging on and securing another crucial away point as the game entered its final stages.
But Nasarawa United were not going to throw in the towel too early, and they persisted and persisted in search of an equaliser before the equaliser came in the 84th minute through Musa Yakubu.
That last-minute equaliser sent the game into a frantic final few minutes with chances galore but neither side could find the winner.
Both sides had to settle for a point to start the season in a good way with the game stretching across early stages of the 2026/27 NPFL season.
Rivers United have a point on the table and now have their eye on the club’s next league game that will see the team continue to mount challenges for other trophies that are up for grabs in the domestic league.
