The Student Union Government (SUG) of the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) has announced the indefinite suspension of a staff member identified as Coach Fidelis following an incident involving a student at the University Sports Institute.
In a statement issued by the SUG President, Comrade Adiele Aleruchi Azubuike, the union said it immediately intervened after the incident occurred on Wednesday and engaged relevant university authorities to seek appropriate action.
According to the statement, the SUG President and representatives of the union proceeded to the Senate Building, where they met with university authorities and insisted that the matter be addressed.
The union subsequently visited the Sports Institute, where the incident reportedly occurred, and continued discussions with the University Management, stressing the need for appropriate action and greater consideration for the safety and welfare of students.
The SUG said the engagements eventually led to the University Management taking action, with Coach Fidelis suspended indefinitely.
The union described the development as the outcome of its immediate intervention and continued engagement with the university authorities.
The SUG also appreciated the University Management for responding to the concerns raised, while acknowledging the importance of due process in handling matters involving students and members of staff.
It urged students to continue to abide by the university’s rules, regulations and lawful directives, and encouraged them to use appropriate channels when addressing grievances and disputes.
The union reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the legitimate rights and interests of students, while expressing readiness to work with the University Management and other stakeholders to maintain a safe, peaceful and conducive learning environment.
