Southern Ijaw Begins 2027 Budget Talks, Puts Job Creation, Development on Front Burner

The Southern Ijaw Local Government Area (SILGA) has commenced consultations for its 2027 Citizens/Annual Budget, with stakeholders from across the local government contributing proposals on key development priorities.

The public interactive session, held in Oporoma and chaired by the Executive Chairman, Hon. Target Segibo, brought together political and opinion leaders, traditional rulers, clergy, government officials, community leaders, youth and women groups, as well as members of the general public.

The engagement was aimed at allowing residents and other stakeholders to contribute directly to the local government’s financial priorities and development plans for 2027.

Speaking at the event, Segibo reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to job creation, highlighting several projects that are nearing completion and are expected to create economic opportunities across the local government.

Among the projects are the Ultra-Modern Park in Oporoma, which the administration said would improve regional transportation and stimulate local commerce, and a 20-bed Primary Health Centre in Igeibiri, expected to strengthen access to healthcare services in rural communities.

The administration also highlighted agricultural projects, including the Southern Ijaw Fish Farm in Igeibiri and a two-hectare cassava farm in Otuan.

According to the council, the agricultural initiatives are intended to support food production, strengthen local value chains and create employment opportunities for residents.

Segibo expressed appreciation to the Traditional Rulers Council of Southern Ijaw, Council of Chiefs, SILGA APC Executive Committee, LGA Permanent Secretaries, political stakeholders, women’s groups and youth organisations for their participation and contributions to the budget consultation.

Looking ahead to the 2027 fiscal year, the administration identified education, healthcare, security and telecommunications expansion as priority areas.

It said targeted interventions in these sectors would focus on infrastructure development and employment opportunities to improve living standards across communities in Southern Ijaw.

The administration also said expanding telecommunications infrastructure would help bridge the digital divide and improve access to digital services for residents of the local government area.
