Rivers United continued their positive start to the 2026/27 Nigeria Premier Football League season with a 2-0 victory over Warri Wolves in their rescheduled Matchday 3 encounter on Wednesday.
The Port Harcourt-based side secured all three points at home, maintaining their perfect start to the league campaign after previously defeating Plateau United 2-0 in their opening fixture.
The match against Warri Wolves had been postponed from the original Matchday 3 schedule because of Rivers United’s involvement in the CAF Champions League.
The NPFL subsequently moved the fixture to September 16. Rivers United entered the contest after a demanding continental schedule that saw them face Ivorian side San Pedro in the CAF Champions League.

The club drew 1-1 in the first leg in Côte d’Ivoire before the return fixture in Uyo.Despite the tight schedule, Rivers United returned to domestic action with another clean-sheet victory, scoring twice while keeping Warri Wolves from finding the net.
The result strengthens Rivers United’s early position in the NPFL and gives head coach Finidi George another positive result as his team balances domestic competition with its continental ambitions.For Warri Wolves, the defeat adds to a difficult opening to the campaign.
The newly promoted side had suffered a 2-1 defeat to Bendel Insurance in its opening league fixture and will now have to regroup ahead of its next assignment.The two clubs have produced competitive encounters in recent seasons, including Warri Wolves’ 2-0 victory over Rivers United in April 2026 and Rivers United’s 2-1 home win in November 2025.
With the 2-0 victory, Rivers United have made a strong statement at the beginning of their domestic campaign. The club will now turn its attention to upcoming NPFL fixtures as it seeks to maintain its momentum while continuing its push on the continental stage.
