The Federal Government has announced plans to activate 200 new telecommunications sites before December 2026 as part of efforts to expand network coverage and connect millions of Nigerians to reliable digital services.
The initiative is expected to support the government’s broader digital inclusion agenda by extending telecommunications infrastructure to underserved and unserved communities across the country. According to the report by PUNCH, the project is part of a wider programme targeting connectivity for more than 20 million Nigerians.
The planned sites are expected to improve access to voice and data services in areas where poor network coverage has continued to limit economic and social activities. Better connectivity could also strengthen access to digital banking, online education, e-commerce, healthcare services and other technology-driven opportunities.
The Federal Government’s intervention comes amid growing demand for reliable telecommunications infrastructure as more Nigerians depend on mobile networks for business, education, communication and access to public services.
The deployment of additional sites is also expected to help address persistent coverage gaps and improve the quality of telecom services. For communities currently experiencing weak signals or limited access to broadband services, the new infrastructure could provide a significant boost to connectivity.
