The Mayor of Port Harcourt City Local Government Area, Sir Allwell Ihunda, has awarded education grants to 450 undergraduate and postgraduate students as part of activities marking his first year in office.
The beneficiaries comprise 400 undergraduates, each receiving ₦200,000, while 50 postgraduate students will receive ₦300,000 each.
Presenting the grants on Friday, Ihunda urged the students to make proper use of the funds to support their studies and pursue their academic goals.
He said the initiative was part of his administration’s efforts to promote education and improve the welfare of residents.
The Mayor also commissioned six 500KVA electricity transformers for communities within the local government, noting that reliable power supply would improve living and working conditions.
Ihunda said other interventions by his administration include school rehabilitation, drainage desilting, free medical outreaches and empowerment programmes.
The Special Guest of Honour, Chief Lasbery Amadi, commended the Mayor for what he described as purposeful leadership, saying improved electricity supply would also support students and businesses.
Eze Rt. Hon. Ken Chikere, Eze Orieku Kpunwo VI, also praised the administration for projects designed to directly benefit residents.
The activities formed part of a four-day commissioning programme marking Ihunda’s first anniversary in office.
