Nigerian fashion designer Veekee James has reacted to a viral video showing media personality Toke Makinwa confronting ushers at an event after one of them allegedly grabbed her baby daughter’s hand to stamp it.
In the footage circulating online, Makinwa was seen having a tense exchange with the ushers after the incident. The protective mother reportedly questioned why anyone would stamp her child’s hand without first seeking her permission.
The incident also drew the attention of Veekee James, who took to Snapchat to criticise people who touch babies in public without obtaining consent from their parents.
Reacting to the video, the designer described the act as unhygienic, stressing that babies frequently put their hands in their mouths.
“I saw a video of Toke Makinwa’s baby, a stranger going to touch the baby’s hand. You are not their friend, you are not her family member, you are not related to them in any way. Why are you carrying your hand to touch a baby’s hand?” she said.
Veekee questioned why anyone would touch a baby’s hands without considering where they had been, especially given that babies often put their hands in their mouths.
She also criticised those who argue that parents should not bring their children to public events if they do not want strangers touching them.
“So, some of you are actually walking around, touching people’s children without asking permission? It cannot even be me. Some people with their dirty hands, keep your hands to yourself. Even if your hands are clean, keep your hands to yourself,” she added.
Veekee’s comments have sparked conversations online, with many people supporting her position on respecting parents’ boundaries and maintaining hygiene around babies at public gatherings.
