The Rivers State Police Command has arrested some staff of a hotel in Eagle Island, Port Harcourt, and other persons in connection with the death of a young man identified as Okorite Charles.
Charles, said to be in his mid-20s, reportedly died under unclear circumstances after lodging at the hotel with some friends.
The command’s spokesperson, ASP Agabe Blessing Karbolo, disclosed this while providing an update on the incident, stating that the deceased was allegedly pushed from an upper floor of the hotel.
Karbolo said Charles was rushed to a hospital immediately after the incident, where a medical doctor reportedly confirmed him dead.
She explained that the deceased’s friends later returned to the hotel and staged a protest, attracting a crowd and raising concerns over a possible breakdown of law and order.
“The victim’s friends came to the hotel and commenced a protest, which attracted a crowd and threatened to disrupt the peace of the area,” she said.

“Upon receipt of the information, police operatives promptly mobilised to the scene and successfully brought the situation under control, preventing further breakdown of law and order.
“The hotel staff on duty at the time of the incident, as well as the victim’s friends who were present with him, were arrested for questioning and investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.”
The police spokesperson added that operations at the hotel had been temporarily restricted pending the conclusion of investigations.
Meanwhile, the deceased’s brother, Mr Obomate, had earlier raised concerns over the circumstances surrounding Charles’ death.
According to him, a doctor at the hospital where Charles was taken reportedly observed what appeared to be a stab wound on his stomach.
He further alleged that the family suspected the deceased might have been struck on the neck with an object.
The police command, however, said investigations were ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding Charles’ death and determine whether any criminal offence was committed.
