Newcastle made a fast start, taking the lead in the fifth minute when Anthony Elanga finished a swift counter-attack. Liverpool responded with pressure, but debutant goalkeeper Lukáš Horníček denied Florian Wirtz with a smart save.
Newcastle continued to threaten on the break after half-time, with Yoane Wissa and William Osula causing problems for Liverpool’s defence. However, the visitors eventually levelled when Cody Gakpo fired a powerful effort into the bottom corner from outside the box.

Liverpool’s defensive struggles soon resurfaced as Joe Willock weaved through the defence before calmly finishing past Alisson Becker to restore Newcastle’s lead.
Newcastle missed several chances to put the game beyond Liverpool, with Alisson denying Wissa one-on-one late on.
The hosts were punished in stoppage time when Lewis Hall brought down substitute Víctor Munoz inside the area. Szoboszlai stepped up and smashed the resulting penalty into the top corner to secure a point.
The result extended Liverpool’s unbeaten run in Premier League opening-day matches to 14 seasons, while Newcastle have now gone 20 league meetings without defeating the Reds.
