WAFU B U20: Flying Eagles edge Ivory Coast to reach final‎

Nigeria’s Flying Eagles have booked their place in the final of the 2026 WAFU B U-20 Championship after defeating hosts Côte d’Ivoire 4-3 on penalties in a dramatic semi-final that ended 2-2 after extra time.

‎The encounter, played on Wednesday, saw the seven-time African champions overcome a spirited Ivorian side, with goalkeeper Lawani Clinton emerging as Nigeria’s hero after making two decisive saves in the penalty shootout. The victory also keeps Nigeria on course to defend its regional title.

‎Côte d’Ivoire dominated the early stages and deservedly took the lead in the 18th minute after creating several scoring opportunities. Nigeria struggled to find their rhythm in the first half but returned from the break with renewed determination.

‎The Flying Eagles drew level in the 68th minute when captain Habila Simeon rose highest to head home the equaliser, ending the hosts’ impressive run without conceding a goal in the tournament.

‎The momentum shifted in Nigeria’s favour during extra time as Abubakar Aliyu put the Flying Eagles ahead with a well-taken finish early in the additional period.

However, the resilient Ivorians refused to surrender and struck late in extra time to make it 2-2, forcing the contest into a penalty shootout.

‎Despite Simeon missing Nigeria’s second spot-kick, Clinton delivered when it mattered most. The goalkeeper denied two Ivorian penalties, allowing Nigeria to secure a 4-3 shootout victory and seal a place in the championship final.

‎The win not only sends the Flying Eagles into the final but also strengthens their quest to retain the WAFU B U-20 title.

The Nigerian youngsters will now focus on lifting the trophy as they continue preparations for the next stage of continental competition, having once again demonstrated resilience, character and composure under pressure in a thrilling West African derby.
