With few days left before INEC’s deadline for the submission of governorship and State House of Assembly candidates, Political parties have intensified efforts to finalize and upload the required details of their candidates.
Following this, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP said it has completed about 90 percent of the submission of its governorship and State House of Assembly candidates to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), as political parties race to meet the August 8 deadline.
According to reports, political parties have shifted their attention to the nomination of governorship and state assembly candidates after concluding the submission of presidential and National Assembly candidates for the 2027 general elections.
It was also gathered that the PDP has already submitted the information of candidates for the majority of the states scheduled to hold governorship elections in 2027.
A total of 31 states are expected to elect governors, while all 36 states will conduct elections for members of their respective Houses of Assembly.
Under INEC’s guidelines, each political party is required to submit the names of its governorship candidates and their running mates in the 31 states, alongside nominees for hundreds of state assembly seats across the country.
Although there were earlier concerns that the volume of submissions could make it difficult for parties to meet the deadline, the PDP has expressed confidence that the process will be completed on schedule.
The PDP National Publicity Secretary, Jungudo Haruna Mohammed, disclosed that as of August 5, roughly 90 percent of the required candidate information had already been uploaded to INEC’s online portal.
He noted that the exercise was progressing without major setbacks and that the remaining submissions would be completed before the August 8 deadline.
Also, the Labour Party (LP) reported significant progress in its preparations. According to the party, it has successfully nominated 1,211 candidates for various elective positions in the 2027 general elections, including governorship, Senate, House of Representatives, and State House of Assembly contests.
LP National Publicity Secretary, Ken Asogwa, said the party had uploaded more than 85 percent of its governorship and state assembly candidates to the INEC’s portal.
Mr. Asogwa expressed confidence that the remaining submissions would be completed ahead of the deadline, noting that the nomination process had proceeded smoothly without any significant technical or administrative challenges.
