Tinubu Commends Team Nigeria Following Glasgow Commonwealth Games Success

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu officially congratulated Team Nigeria on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, following the national contingent’s landmark performance at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.

In a statement issued through his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President commended the athletes, technical crew, and sports administrators for flying the country’s flag with distinction, pride, and unwavering resilience throughout the multi-sport tournament.

Team Nigeria concluded the international competition as the highest-ranked African nation and seventh overall on the global medal table, capturing a total of 24 medals comprising 10 gold, seven silver, and seven bronze.

President Tinubu highlighted that the squad’s outstanding achievement stands as a direct reflection of the discipline, determination, and competitive spirit that define the Nigerian people.

The President noted that whether standing on the podium or delivering courageous performances in grueling preliminary heats, every member of the delegation represented the Federal Republic of Nigeria with immense honor and dignity on the world stage.

Historic gold-medal displays across track and field, weightlifting, and para-sports disciplines spearheaded the national team’s successful outing in Glasgow.

Key gold medalists included Samuel Ogazi in the men’s 400 meters, Ezekiel Nathaniel in the 400-meter hurdles, Chukwuebuka Enekwechi in the shot put, para-athletics champion Goodness Nwachukwu, and world-record breaker Folashade Oluwafemiayo in para-powerlifting.

Furthermore, Nigerian athletes set three of the six global records during the tournament, setting new benchmarks in international strength and field sports.

Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to youth development and national sports growth, President Tinubu pledged sustained federal investment toward modernizing training facilities, strengthening national sporting federations, and creating expanded opportunities for young athletes across all six geopolitical zones.

He praised the joint administrative efforts of the National Sports Commission (NSC) and the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) in preparing the contingent for top-flight international competition.
