FIFA has identified four critical areas Nigeria must address if the Super Eagles are to secure qualification for the 2030 FIFA World Cup, following the team’s failure to reach the last two editions of the global tournament.
The recommendations were directed at the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) as preparations gradually begin for the next qualifying campaign.
According to FIFA’s assessment, the first priority is ensuring stability within the national team’s technical crew.
The world football governing body stressed that frequent coaching changes have disrupted continuity and affected the team’s long-term development, urging the NFF to provide a stable environment that allows coaches to implement a clear football philosophy.
FIFA also called for merit-based player selection, emphasizing that squad invitations should be based strictly on form, performance, and commitment.
The body noted that Nigeria possesses an abundance of talented footballers competing in top European leagues, but consistent selection policies are essential to maximizing that talent.
Another major recommendation focused on governance and administration.
FIFA encouraged the NFF to strengthen transparency, improve decision-making processes, and reduce administrative instability, which it believes has negatively impacted the country’s football progress in recent years.
The fourth area highlighted was investment in modern football development, including sports science, fitness programmes, youth development, and improved player welfare. FIFA believes these measures will help Nigeria compete consistently with the world’s leading football nations.
Despite missing qualification for both the 2022 and 2026 FIFA World Cups, FIFA maintained that Nigeria remains one of Africa’s football powerhouses with the quality required to return to the biggest stage.
The governing body expressed confidence that implementing these reforms would significantly improve the Super Eagles’ chances of qualifying for the 2030 tournament.
The Super Eagles, three-time African champions, will now be expected to translate these recommendations into tangible progress as the NFF seeks to restore Nigeria’s status among the world’s elite football nations.
