FG Sets Up Committee to Develop New VAT Framework Under Tax Reform Laws

A group has been established by the Federal Government to handle the 2026 Value Added Tax Modification Order. This group is essential for assisting investors and tax officials in understanding the tax laws in Nigeria.

In Abuja, Taiwo Oyedele, the Minister of Finance, established this team. He stated that the Nigeria Tax Act 2025 would be used as the basis for the new Value Added Tax framework.

The Tax Reform Acts were initiated on January 1, 2026. These modifications are designed to streamline tax payments and promote economic growth in the country.

According to the Minister, this team has a task to undertake. A practical VAT Modification Order must be established that reflects the current economy and eliminates any tax confusion.

This team will analyze the legislation and regulations related to VAT. They will compile a list of items that are either exempt from or do not require Value Added Tax. Their responsibility will be to ensure that the new regulations comply with the Nigeria Tax Act.

The team will analyze the impact of these modifications on the government’s earnings, its populace, and Nigeria’s oaths made to nations.

According to the Minister, it is important to engage in dialogue with team members, including those from government, private companies, and professional groups.

The final plan will be made more impartial and straightforward with ease by this step. The team has the authority to propose modifications to the tax laws to enhance their effectiveness if required.

According to the Minister, the new Value Added Tax framework is expected to boost investment and facilitate exports in Nigeria’s industries. This is a welcome development. The country should be able to promote new ideas and use alternative energy sources with greater ease.

The aim is to ensure that the tax system remains impartial. The team has until the next six weeks to create a draft version of the Value Added Tax Modification Order. Included in the report is a list of items that can be implemented without paying any VAT or complying with VAT guidelines.

The staff includes representatives from the Federal Ministry of Finance, Nigeria Revenue Service, Lagos Customs Service, and other relevant agencies.

According to the Minister, this team is capable of completing its tasks. They will facilitate the flow of business in Nigeria and provide investors with greater confidence. It will contribute to the Federal Government’s initiative to modify its approach to managing finances.
