‎CAF Champions League: How Rivers Utd Could Benefit From The Expanded Format‎

‎Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) clubs could benefit significantly if the Confederation of African Football (CAF) adopts an expanded format for the CAF Champions League. The proposed changes are expected to create more opportunities for clubs across the continent while increasing revenue, exposure and the overall quality of African club football.

‎The report explained that under the current format, clubs from CAF’s member associations compete in two preliminary rounds before the tournament is reduced to a 16-team group stage. Some clubs from the continent’s highest-ranked leagues receive byes into later qualifying rounds, leaving limited opportunities for many teams to experience the competition’s main phase.

‎An expanded competition, similar to Europe’s UEFA Champions League or South America’s Copa Libertadores, would allow more African clubs to participate in the group stage. For NPFL teams, this could translate into increased match experience, higher commercial revenues, improved sponsorship opportunities and greater international visibility.

‎The report noted that Nigerian clubs have struggled to make a sustained impact in recent editions of the CAF Champions League, often exiting during the preliminary rounds. A larger tournament format would provide additional competitive fixtures against top opposition, helping clubs gain valuable continental experience and accelerate their development.

‎Beyond sporting benefits, the expansion could strengthen the commercial appeal of the NPFL. More appearances in Africa’s premier club competition would attract television audiences, corporate sponsorships and increased prize money, enabling clubs to invest more in player development, infrastructure and youth academies.

‎Football analysts also believe a broader Champions League would raise the standard of domestic competitions across Africa, as clubs strive to qualify for a tournament offering greater financial rewards and international recognition. The increased level of competition could ultimately improve the quality of football in the NPFL and make Nigerian clubs more competitive on the continental stage.

‎While CAF has not officially confirmed any expansion plans, discussions around revising the tournament format have continued in recent years as the governing body seeks to increase the competition’s appeal and commercial value. The 2026/27 CAF Champions League is scheduled to begin with the preliminary rounds in September under the existing format.

‎Should the proposed expansion eventually be implemented, it could mark a significant turning point for Nigerian clubs, offering the NPFL a stronger platform to showcase its talent, enhance financial sustainability and restore its competitiveness in African club football.
