Customs Set to Roll Out Full Cargo Scanning at Onne Port

As part of its efforts to strengthen border security, curb the importation of prohibited goods, and improve trade facilitation, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) will soon begin scanning all cargo at Onne Port in Rivers State.

The Service’s National Public Relations Officer, Deputy Comptroller Abdullahi Maiwadal, announced this during a press conference in Port Harcourt before the 2026 deadline. Customs Public Relations Week.

He stated that the cargo scanning system is currently in use at Apapa Port and will soon be extended to Onne Port. Onne is where we will soon be conducting 100% scanning.

After scanning the entire cargo, the headquarters will provide images for further analysis. The. According to him, these are essential components of the system’s checks and balances to safeguard Nigerians.

Although the reforms may be subject to opposition, Maiwad emphasized that “the Service is committed to effectively using technology to promote transparency, compliance, and national security.”

Additionally, he explained why the Service had declared a “state of emergency” at Onne Port in September 2024 after intercepting containers carrying illicit substances and light weapons.

He stated that this measure was implemented to enhance monitoring measures and prevent the entry of illegal goods, rather than hinder cargo clearance.

‘State of emergency’ does not mean that goods have not been cleared. We are deploying more personnel and resources to prevent dangerous items from entering the country through Onne Port, as per his statement.

The President’s statement on Friday emphasized the importance of effective communication between the Customs Service and the media, while also calling for continued reforms.

Beforehand, Chairman of the Local Organising Committee for 2026. Port Harcourt was selected for the event by Emmanuel Tangwa, who works for Public Relations Week, citing the Service’s commitment to accountability and stakeholder relations in relation to its strategic role in Nigeria’S maritime sector.
