The National Sports Commission (NSC) stated in the early hours of Friday 17th of July that every Nigerian who wins a gold medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland will get a total of $8000.
While the commission made this announcement on Friday they clearly gave a breakdown of the earnings that anyone who wins a gold medal will immediately get $3000, and will also get a performance bonus of $5000 that will be paid directly into their bank account.
On the other hand, people who win silver medals will get a total of $5000, and those who win bronze medals will get $3000.
The NSC also said that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will meet with the athletes who win medals after the Commonwealth Games to thank them for what they have achieved.
Most of the athletes going to the Commonwealth Games have been training in Aberdeen to get ready for the competition.
The NSC said that the athletes have been getting $150 per day and the coaches have been getting $200 per day to help them while they are training. They said that most of these payments have already been made, though there are a few problems with some of the payments because of banking issues. Notwithstanding, these problems are being fixed with the help of the sports federations.
When the Commonwealth Games start the athletes will get $200 per day and the coaches will get $250, per day.
The NSC also announced that the Nigerian athletes will be wearing clothes made by Puma, a sports company for the Commonwealth Games.
The 2026 CWG will be held from July 23 to August 2.
Nigeria won 34 medals 11 gold, 9 silver, 14 bronze at the 2022 CWG in Birmingham, England.
