The Nigeria female senior team will bring to a conclusion their preparation for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) with a friendly match against the neighboring country Ghana’s Black Queens in Casablanca on Saturday.
According to the report, it is claimed that this match is part of their preparations for the 14th edition of the tournament, which starts in Morocco on Sunday, in full preparation to that, the nine-time African champions began their training camp in Casablanca on Monday as they work hard to get ready for the event.
Tue report has it that as of Tuesday afternoon 14th of July, a total of 10 players had arrived at the team’s camp at the Marriott Hotel in Casablanca, and midfielder Toni Payne was expected to join on Wednesday after completing her transfer from Everton Women to Inter Milan Women.
Justine Madugu, the Head Coach of the Nigerian Super Falcons led the team’s first training session on Tuesday at Stade El Arbi Zaouli, the same place where Saturday’s friendly against Ghana will take place at 4 pm.
Some of the players who have already joined the camp are captain Rasheedat Ajibade, goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, Fatima Oloko, defenders Oluwatosin Demehin, Glory Ogbonna, Shukurat Oladipo, and Rofiat Imuran, midfielder Jennifer Echegini, and forward Asisat Oshoala.
Unarguably, the friendly encounter between the Falcons of Nigeria and Ghana brings back one of Africa’s top rivalries in women’s football. The Black Queens reached the final of the first Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, which was hosted by Nigeria in 1998, where they finished as runners-up.
The Super Falcons of Nigeria will start their Group C matches on July 28 in Rabat, playing against Malawi, followed by Zambia on August 1 and Egypt on August 5 as they aim to win the continental title again.
The Women African Cup of Nations also acts as a qualification event for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil. The four teams that reach the semi-finals will qualify automatically, while the fifth-placed team will go into an intercontinental playoff for a final chance to qualify.
