Armed Forces Doctrine Review Team Visits 6 Division HQ, Port Harcourt

The Committee on Review of the Joint Defence Doctrine, JDD, 2017 has paid a consultative visit to Headquarters 6 Division Nigerian Army, Port Harcourt Barracks Rivers State, as part of its efforts to produce an updated doctrine that reflects Nigeria’s evolving security environment and contemporary operational realities.

In a statement by the Acting Deputy Director 6 Division Nigerian Army Public Relations, Lieutenant Colonel Umar Adam, the delegation, led by the Chairman of the Committee, Major General Ademola Adedoja, brainstormed with commanders and senior officers of the Division on ways to obtain professional inputs for incorporation into the 2026 Joint Defence Doctrine.

Major General Adedoja while speaking explained that the Joint Defence Doctrine Review Committee was established in 2017 to periodically review the Armed Forces of Nigeria’s guiding doctrinal document.

He disclosed that the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, directed the current review to ensure the doctrine remains relevant to contemporary operational demands.

According to him, the review seeks to align the doctrine with prevailing security realities across all theatres of operation through extensive consultations with formations and stakeholders.

The Chairman further noted that although the doctrine ought to have undergone periodic reviews, attempts to update it in 2022 and 2025 were not concluded.

He emphasized that meaningful consultations were essential, stressing that the committee was committed to producing an inclusive document informed by practical operational experiences.

Major General Adedoja therefore, encouraged commanders and staff officers of 6 Division Nigerian Army as well as affiliated formations and units to make candid and constructive contributions, assuring them that every submission would receive due consideration.

The General Officer Commanding 6 Division Nigerian Army and Land Component Commander, Joint Task Force (South-South) Operation DELTA SAFE, Major General Emmanuel Emekah, who was represented by the Chief of Staff Headquarters 6 Division Nigerian Army, Brigadier General Emmanuel Adamu welcomed the delegation and reaffirmed the Division’s commitment to supporting the review process by providing valuable operational insights that would enrich the 2026 Joint Defence Doctrine.

The visit featured an interactive session during which senior officers made observations and recommendations on key doctrinal issues. Other highlights included the presentation of a souvenir to the Chairman of the Committee and a group photograph to commemorate the consultative engagement.
