In a move to revamp agriculture and empower young people, the Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Hon. Dr. Gift Worlu, has visited trainees undergoing intensive agricultural training across Rivers State facilities.
According to a statement by the Chief Press Secretary of the Council, Mr. Goodluck Nsirim, Dr Worlu, during the visit, reaffirmed his administration’s strong commitment to agricultural development and youth empowerment, describing the initiative as a game-changer for food production and economic growth in the area.
According to him, the local government-sponsored programme is equipping participants with practical, hands-on skills in key sectors including fisheries, piggery, poultry, livestock farming, crop production, and modern agricultural techniques. The goal is clear: turn trainees into successful entrepreneurs who can drive food security and create wealth.
Speaking during the visit, Prof. Kii Kabarel, Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture at Rivers State University, showered praises on the Chairman for conceiving and fully funding the programme.

“Agriculture remains one of the most strategic sectors in our economy today,” he said, adding that the training would give participants the knowledge and experience needed to build sustainable enterprises.
Prof. Stanley Dimkpa, Chairman of the Rivers State University Farm, also lauded the initiative as a smart investment in human capital. He urged the trainees to stay focused and committed, promising they would emerge as skilled agri-preneurs.
Other experts at the event, including Associate Prof. Ben Otene, Head of Fisheries and Aquatic Environment; Dr. Ben Iyieke, Senior Chief Technologist in Crop Production; and Mr. Felix Baridole, Fish Technologist, encouraged the beneficiaries to embrace innovation, discipline, and cutting-edge farming methods.
Chairman Worlu assured the trainees of continued support, stating that the programme’s main objective is to make them economically independent after graduation.
The excited trainees expressed deep gratitude to the Chairman for the life-changing opportunity. They pledged to make the most of the training and establish thriving agricultural businesses that will benefit their families, communities, and the local economy.
