The women of Angalabiri Federated Community of Sagbama Local Government Area of Bayelsa State have announced that no political party would campaign in their community until the development problems are resolved.
According to the women, after staging a peaceful demonstration on Friday, years of political commitments failed to improve their living condition, thus making them take a strong stand against future political campaigning.
Wearing placards and singing songs of unity, the protesters noted that all political parties, including APC, PDP, ADC, and others, will not be allowed into the community for any form of campaign until their demands are met.
Speaking on behalf of her fellow women, the chair lady of the women’s body, Mrs. Amos Priscilla, explained that the people of the community have been suffering for several years without anything being done for them by the politicians during the period of elections.
Some of the demands raised by the protesters include provision of an access road to the community, improvement in MTN network coverage in the community, economic empowerment of women in the community, and creation of job opportunity for the women of the community.
The women further said that politicians should complete the old project before politicians commencing a new campaign, stressing that elected officials must deliver tangible projects rather than return with fresh promises every election cycle.
They warned that if their demands remain unmet, they would mobilise to prevent political parties and their candidates from holding campaign rallies or other election-related activities in the community.
Meanwhile the protesters who remained peaceful during protest emphasised they are no longer interested on several empty promises, stressing that their arms are open to politicians who are willing to help the community.
