House of Representatives Celebrates 27 Years Of Unbroken Democracy In Nigeria

The House of Representatives on Friday June 12, 2026 joined millions of Nigerians in marking Democracy Day 2026, celebrating 27 years of uninterrupted democratic rule while calling for renewed commitment to strengthening the nation’s democratic institutions.

In a statement issued by its Spokesman, Rep. Akin Rotimi, the House described the milestone as a significant national achievement that reflects the resilience of Nigeria’s democratic institutions and the people’s unwavering faith in governance through dialogue and the rule of law.

The lower chamber paid tribute to the sacrifices of Nigerians whose courage and patriotism paved the way for the current democratic dispensation.

“Twenty-seven years of unbroken democratic practice is a significant national achievement,” the statement said.

“It demonstrates the resilience of our institutions, the enduring faith of Nigerians in democratic governance, and our collective determination to resolve differences through dialogue, representation, and the rule of law.”

As the closest institution to the people and the symbol of representative democracy, the House reiterated its dedication to deepening democratic governance through responsive legislation, robust oversight, and active citizen engagement.

The statement highlighted key legislative achievements of the House in the past year, particularly the passage of comprehensive electoral reforms signed into law in February 2026.

It noted that other motions and parliamentary initiatives have been directed at strengthening institutions, improving governance, and broadening democratic participation.

With Nigeria preparing for its eighth consecutive general election since the return to civilian rule, the House urged citizens to participate actively and peacefully in the democratic process.

“Strong institutions and an engaged citizenry remain the enduring pillars of a thriving democracy,” it said.

The statement further emphasised that democracy thrives not only through periodic elections but also through the values citizens uphold in their daily lives.

“The House of Representatives reaffirms its unwavering commitment to protecting democratic institutions, advancing the public interest, and ensuring that the voice of every Nigerian continues to find expression through representative government,” Rotimi stated.
