The Board of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has appointed Princess Oforitsenere Emiko as the Interim Chairman of the governing board of the Digital Bridge Institute (DBI). This decision aligns with the Commission’s strategy to reposition the Institute for the forthcoming phase of Nigeria’s communications sector and digital economy.
The announcement regarding the appointment was made on Monday through a statement issued by the NCC’s Director of Public Affairs, Nnenna Ukoha.
Joining her on the board are Mr. Abraham Oshadami, Executive Commissioner for Technical Services, and Ms. Rimini Makama, Executive Commissioner for Stakeholder Management, both of whom will serve as interim board members. The interim leadership will collaborate with the President/CEO, Mr. David Daser, and the other board members whose terms have not yet expired, to facilitate the transformation of the Institute.
Founded by the NCC in May 2004, DBI was established as a specialized center for training in telecommunications and information technology. Over the past two decades, the sector it supports has expanded from telecommunications into a dynamic and rapidly evolving digital economy.
The digital economy has developed into a field where technological advancements occur swiftly, necessitating ongoing specialized training, and where communications infrastructure is regarded as a matter of national sovereignty and oversight. Ensuring the future of communications and the digital economy has now become a significant national and economic priority.
This future is also dependent on Nigeria’s youthful demographic. With 70 percent of Nigerians being under the age of 30, the transformation of DBI aims to empower young individuals, provide them with advanced technical skills, and bridge the capability gap that currently hinders the speed of technology adoption within the communications sector and the broader digital economy.
The restructured Institute will focus on five key areas: Education and Training, Research and Development, Innovation, Economic Impact and Growth, and Emerging Policy and Regulation.
