The Nigerian Navy has asserted that Its increasing utilization of advanced technology is proving to be a significant factor in its effort to curb the menace of crude oil theft with visible progress recorded on the issue of securing the country’s coastal and riverine areas.
In his words, during a recent interview, the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla (through Idi Abbas) emphasized the importance of technology in facilitating the identification and elimination of any form of crime within Nigeria’s waters.
He went ahead to assert that the enhanced technological capacity to monitor suspicious activities in the country has proven very effective.
Abbas further revealed that the use of advanced technologies has been a key factor behind the successful efforts of reducing the act of crude oil theft that has plagued the country’s waters for years.
“The use of technology has been helpful in curbing crude oil theft,” he stated.
Aside from oil bunkering, the Nigerian Navy has been successful in fighting piracy, ensuring safety in the nation’s coastal regions and rivers.
Abbas affirmed that there has been marked improvement in terms of security in the maritime region, unlike in past years, where many coastal areas are now relatively peaceful.
Abbas added that the tasks of the Nigerian Navy are no longer confined to the seas alone.
Nigerian Navy soldiers have been actively participating in various military actions on land in the fight against terrorism, insurgency, and other crimes across the nation.
Moving forward, Abbas asserted that cooperation between various security outfits, combined with technological advancements, will prove crucial in maintaining their successes thus far and overcoming future security challenges.
