Four Nigerian athletes, including 150m world record holder Favour Ofili, African 400m hurdles record holder Ezekiel Nathaniel, Rosemary Chukwuma and African indoor 400m record holder Ella Onojuvwevwo, are set to compete at the inaugural Lone Star Grand Prix in Texas on Saturday.
Ezekiel Nathaniel, Rosemary Chukwuma and Ella Onojuvwevwo are the Nigerian athletes competing at the Lone Star Grand Prix and part of the USATF Tour. It is one of two World Athletics Continental Tour Gold meetings in the United States this season.
Favour Ofili recently had her nationality switch to Turkey turned down, and this meeting is another chance for her to compete against athletes, in the women’s 200m.
Ofili will compete against Gabby Thomas, who is the Olympic champion, Rhasidat Adeleke, who finished fourth in the Olympic 400m and Deajah Stevens, who is a world and Olympic finalist are also competing.
The women’s 200m will also feature Cambrea Sturgis, so she has already run 21.93 this season. Other athletes competing include Mariah Maxwell, Jenna Prandini and Kayla White.
Record has it that Rosemary Chukwuma has a best of 10.95 seconds. She has also run a wind-assisted 10.81 this season, Chukwuma will compete in the women’s 100m against Tamari Davis.
History has it that Tamari Davis is the 2023 world 4x100m relay champion, and Jodean Williams, who won silver in the event is also competing.
In the women’s 400m Ella Onojuvwevwo will try to keep her momentum going that she recently set an indoor record of 50.28. Onojuvwevwo will compete against Stacey Ann Williams, Britton Wilson and Bailey Lear.
On the other hand, Ezekiel Nathaniel will start his season in the men’s 400m hurdles, he will compete against talent, including Caleb Dean and Trevor Bassitt.
The men’s 100m will feature the likes of Oblique Seville, who will compete against Andre De Grasse, Trayvon Bromell, Zharnel Hughes and Ronnie Baker.
