Olatunji Disu, the Inspector-General of Police has stated that discussions regarding Artificial Intelligence (AI) are no longer focused on the future, emphasizing that this technology is already transforming the operations of security agencies worldwide.
A statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), DCP Anthony Placid, in Abuja yesterday, indicated that the IGP made these comments during the conclusion of the second AI-POL Leadership Dialogue Workshop.
Placid mentioned that the workshop, titled: ‘Advancing Innovation, Governance and the Responsible Use of Artificial Intelligence in Law Enforcement,’ was designed for law enforcement leaders, technology specialists, and international collaborators.
“The IGP reflected on the extensive discussions at the workshop, highlighting that these conversations underscored a straightforward yet pressing reality.
“AI is no longer a concept to be anticipated in the far-off future; it is actively transforming the operations of security agencies globally,” he remarked.
He further noted that the workshop facilitated open and fruitful discussions among law enforcement leaders, technology specialists, and international partners regarding the implications of AI for the future of policing.
As per his statement, participants investigated practical applications of AI in security operations and assessed the challenges linked to the integration of emerging technologies.
He mentioned that attendees also learned from global experiences to devise a practical strategy for the Nigeria Police Force moving forward.
“A significant aspect of the workshop was a focused presentation based on the results of the 5th Global Meeting for AI and Law Enforcement, which acknowledged Nigeria as a key partner for the African AI Policing Pilot.
“Participants were encouraged not to confine the knowledge acquired to the conference room but to return to their respective commands and implement it in practice,” he stated.
The FPRO praised the workshop organizers for their ongoing commitment to fostering safer communities and enhancing accountability within the police service.
