Wrexham AFC celebrated their goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo who kept a sheet on his Nigeria debut when the Super Eagles won 2-0 against Zimbabwe in the Unity Cup semi-final in London. The 24-year-old goalkeeper played well on Tuesday at The Valley and helped Nigeria made it to the final.
The victory helped the Super Eagles get closer to winning the Unity Cup after missing out in the previous edition. After the match Wrexham AFC praised Arthur Okonkwo on the media.
The club posted: “Arthur Okonkwo kept a sheet on his Super Eagles debut.”
Report has it that Arthur Okonkwo played for England when he was younger, which means he can play for Nigeria because of his parents. FIFA approved his switch for allegiance in April so he can play for the Super Eagles.
Coach Eric Chelle chose Arthur Okonkwo to play his game after enjoying his first clean sheet he now wants to keep playing for Nigeria in the final, he also wants to play in friendlies against Portugal and Poland in June.
Arthur Okonkwos debut for Nigeria is an achievement for the squad. The young lad joined Wrexham AFC from Arsenal in 2023, then he made a move in 2024 where he signed a three-year contract with Wrexham.
Arthur Okonkwo has done well with Wrexham AFC, helped the team get promoted two times. As a matter of fact, he was in the League Two Team of the Season for 2023/24. Statistically, Okonkwo played 39 games for Wrexham, and Kept 10 clean sheets.
