Students Unveil AI Solutions At DeepFunding Hackathon Finale

‎Twelve student teams from various regions of Nigeria convened in Lagos for the grand finale of the Nigerian National AI Hackathon, which was organized by DeepFunding and SingularityNET.

This event highlighted a new generation of locally developed artificial intelligence solutions aimed at enhancing healthcare access, promoting language inclusion, and advancing assistive technology.

‎The finale took place at the Remostart AI and Blockchain Labs in December of last year, representing the conclusion of a nationwide innovation initiative that included regional and university hackathons across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.

This initiative ultimately selected the top-performing teams for a final 12-hour build challenge and pitch session at the Lagos Oriental Hotel.

‎In a statement released on Sunday, the organizers noted that the competition is part of a growing effort to motivate African developers to create AI products that are tailored to local needs, rather than depending solely on imported technologies.

‎The top award was presented to Doctor Robot, an AI-driven medical companion designed to offer healthcare guidance in several Nigerian languages.

‎The developers explained that the platform was created to fill accessibility gaps in a nation where millions primarily communicate in indigenous languages rather than English.

‎Team Sophia achieved second place with an AI-based community healthcare system focused on enhancing access to medical support at the grassroots level, while Team Eusate secured third place with a multilingual customer support platform that accommodates major Nigerian languages and Nigerian Pidgin.

‎Other finalists included Team SOAT, which developed an AI-powered automated medication dispensing system, and Path Pilot, an AI visual navigation solution designed for visually impaired users. Path Pilot also earned a Special Judges’ Award for the excellence of its presentation and solution design.

‎The variety of projects showcased during the finale underscored an increasing recognition among young Nigerian developers regarding the socioeconomic issues facing the country and the potential contributions of AI in tackling these challenges.

‎Numerous solutions aimed at enhancing access to healthcare services, minimizing language barriers, increasing accessibility for individuals with disabilities, and fortifying community-level support systems.

‎DeepFunding characterized the Nigerian hackathon as a possible model for the development of AI ecosystems in emerging markets, especially as African nations strive to enhance local technological capabilities in the context of growing global interest in artificial intelligence.
