The Rivers Peace Initiative (RPI) has appealed to all residents of Rivers State to embrace restraint and unity in the wake of recent political developments that have triggered widespread emotions and debates across the state.
In a statement issued by its Convener, Mr. Obinna Ebogidi on Friday 22 May 2026, the group acknowledged the deep feelings of disappointment and concerns over issues of fairness, inclusion, representation, and equity that many citizens currently harbour.
However, it warned against allowing these sentiments to degenerate into ethnic animosity, bitterness, or actions that could further polarise the state.
“While citizens have every right to express disappointment, concerns, and differing opinions, Rivers State must avoid descending into bitterness, dangerous ethnic narratives, political hostility, or actions capable of deepening divisions within the state,” the statement read.
According to the statement, The RPI stressed the need for all stakeholders including political actors, traditional rulers, religious leaders, youth organisations, and the media to engage in sober reflection and promote healing.
The group noted that Rivers State has endured significant political tensions in recent years and must now consciously work towards de-escalating conflicts while advancing issue-based democratic engagement.
“The future of Rivers State cannot be built on anger alone. It must be built on justice, dialogue, inclusion, democratic maturity, and the collective willingness of all groups to protect the stability and progress of the state above temporary political victories or disappointments,” the statement added.
The Rivers Peace Initiative further called on Rivers people to remain law-abiding and measured in their actions and public comments as political activities continued.
“History has shown repeatedly that once division and violence are unleashed, everyone ultimately bears the cost,” it warned.
The group urged the state to draw strength from great societies in history that chose wisdom over provocation and healing over hatred at critical moments.
