TCN describes additional 600MW to National grid as milestone to strengthen nation’s transmission network

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has described the addition of 600 megawatts to the national grid following the completion of the Ihovbor/Benin and Ihovbor/Ajaokuta 330kV Turn-In-Turn-Out Transmission Line Project in Edo State as a major milestone in efforts to strengthen the nation’s transmission network .

Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of TCN, Sule Abdulaziz, who made this known during the official commissioning of the project in the State said it would also improve the evacuation of bulk electricity from the Ihovbor Transmission Substation to distribution load centres across the country.

According to him, the project involved linking the existing Benin/Ajaokuta 330kV transmission line to the Ihovbor Transmission Substation, creating two new transmission routes spanning 14 kilometres.

He said the completion of the project had improved the operational flexibility of the transmission network and strengthened the resilience of power delivery within the Benin corridor.

Abdulaziz noted that the project would enable TCN to evacuate more electricity generated by the Azura Power Plant and the Niger Delta Power Holding Company plant, thereby easing transmission bottlenecks and improving system reliability. He explained that the development would also allow distribution companies to access more bulk electricity for supply to customers nationwide.

“With the nation’s grid system, the new transmission line will enable more efficient wheeling of bulk electricity to any part of the country.

Power generated from the Benin axis can now easily be wheeled nationwide,” he said.

The TCN boss said the project aligned with the company’s goal of building a stronger and more efficient transmission grid while demonstrating its commitment to innovation and collaboration within the power sector.

“Before now, there was power generated without evacuation, but with this project, we can evacuate more power, which means Nigerians will enjoy improved electricity supply,” he added.
