Ahead of 2027The Nigerian Senate has passed a comprehensive resolution that will govern the swearing-in of senators-elect and the election of principal officers in the next assembly after the 2027 general elections.
The resolution, adopted on Monday, May 11, 2026, during plenary, spells out clear procedures aimed at ensuring order, seniority and adherence to the federal character principle in the leadership of the 10th Senate.
According to the new guidelines, any senator-elect unable to take the Oath of Allegiance and Oath of Membership on the first sitting day will still be sworn in by the President of the Senate at any subsequent sitting.
However, failure, neglect or inability to take the oath within the stipulated period could lead to the seat being declared vacant in line with the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) would then be notified to conduct a fresh election in the affected senatorial district.
The resolution approves that each senator-elect must present the writ of election and receipt of declaration of assets and liabilities, which the Clerk will lay before the Senate.
The resolution also established tough eligibility criteria for leadership positions as No senator shall be eligible to contest for the position of Presiding Officer unless he or she has served at least two full terms of eight years, one of which must precede the election.
Similarly, a senator will not qualify for appointment as a principal officer unless he or she has served a full term of four years immediately preceding such appointment.
In addition, the appointment of senators as chairmen and members of committees must reflect Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones without predominance from any particular zone.
