After the recent report confirming that Rivers United have qualified for seasons in the CAF Champions League, the head coach, Finidi George is now focusing on winning the Nigeria Premier Football League title.
Rivers United got their ticket on Sunday, after defeating Wikki Tourists 3-2 in an NPFL match in Bauchi. Though they’re currently one point behind leaders Enugu Rangers International. The win keeps them in the title race before the game of the season.
Rangers on the other hand stayed on top after beating Bendel Insurance F.C. 2-1 In Enugu, which means the title race will now go to the day. Rangers will play Ikorodu City F.C. Rivers United will host Katsina United. Finidi said his team wants to win the league crown.
He said, “Qualifying for the CAF Champions League two years in a row is an achievement, Many clubs want these positions but fail to get there. The players deserve credit as a matter of fact and we want to see if we can finish the job and win the title ”
Finidi praised his players for coming from behind to beat Wikki Tourists.
He said, “The game was very difficult, coming from behind twice and still finding a way to win shows the team’s mentality.
The players gave everything in the minutes to score the winning goal. Playing away in Bauchi with Wikkis home crowd was never going to be easy ”
Rivers United played in the CAF Champions League this season. They were the only NPFL team but got knocked out in the group stage.
History around Finidi could repeat itself, he led Enyimba to their league title in 2023. He is now chasing his trophy, with Rivers United, after joining the pride of Rivers in the summer of 2024.
