The Chairman of Okrika Local Government Area, Hon. Akuro Tobin, has commenced the construction of a twin-storey, 40-room lodge for members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
The project, sited in Okochiri Community, is designed to provide accommodation and basic facilities for corps members serving in the area.
Speaking at the flag-off ceremony, Tobin said the initiative reflects his administration’s commitment to youth development, education, and national integration.
He explained that the lodge is being developed with key facilities, including a common room fitted with electronic equipment, a laundry section, and a solar-powered lighting system.
According to him, the project is not only for Okrika but for corps members from different parts of the country who are posted to serve in the area.
“It is our duty to ensure they have a welcoming environment where they can live and work effectively,” he said, adding that the project would be completed within a short period.
The council chairman also stressed the importance of peace in sustaining development efforts, while commending the Amanyanabo of Okochiri Kingdom, King Ateke Tom, for maintaining stability in the area.
The NYSC Zonal Director, Mr. Musa Adamu, praised the local government for supporting corps members, noting that the provision of accommodation and other welfare support aligns with the objectives of the scheme.
He said decent housing remains one of the key challenges faced by corps members during service and commended the initiative as a step in the right direction.
Also speaking, the Chairman of the Okochiri Kingdom Council of Chiefs, Chief Jackson Tom Adoki, described the project as a contribution to national unity, saying it would strengthen integration among young Nigerians.
He added that adequate security would be provided to protect the facility when completed.Dignitaries present at the event included the Vice Chairman of Okrika LGA, Mrs. Charity Ibulubo; Leader of the 8th Assembly, Hon. Paul Abam; councillors; traditional rulers; and other stakeholders.
