Fubara Sets January Deadline for New Creek Road Market Completion

Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has assured residents that the ongoing reconstruction of the popular Creek Road Market in the old Port Harcourt Township will be completed and ready for use by January.

The governor gave the assurance during an inspection of the project site, where he expressed satisfaction with the pace and quality of work being handled by the contractor.

Gov. Fubara said the decision to prioritise the market project came after his administration discovered that traders at the old Creek Road Market had extended their activities onto the road due to lack of adequate space, creating serious obstruction to ongoing road construction in the area.

According to him, though the government had earlier promised to rehabilitate all roads in the Town axis, it became necessary to first address the market challenge in order to ensure lasting and effective road development.

He noted that the old market spillover had become a major setback to construction works, prompting the state government to embark on building a bigger and more comfortable market for traders and residents.

The governor noted that the new market project has been divided into Sections A, B, and C, with active construction already ongoing in one section while preparations continue for the others.

He disclosed that one of the sections was discovered to be a borrow pit, requiring evacuation and filling before full construction could begin.

Gov. Fubara said the contractor had assured him that all challenges would be resolved within the project timeline and that the market would be fully delivered between now and January.

Describing the project as a reflection of his administration’s commitment to good governance, the governor said the completed market would not only improve trading conditions but also support road infrastructure development across the Town area.

He maintained that projects like the Creek Road Market would continue to serve as visible proof of his government’s focus on people-oriented development and sustainable urban renewal.
