Residents of Ebis Road, off Winners’ Road, Etegwe, in the Yenagoa Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, have sent a distress call to the state government.
The save our soul call to the governor, Senator Douye Diri, was following a persistent foul smell caused by sewage discharged from a recently constructed shopping mall and hotel in the area.
The appeal for the immediate evacuation of the waste was made to the governor through his technical adviser, Mr Morris Alagoa.
The victims of the pollution sought government’s urgent intervention, lamenting that the foul odor rising from the sewage was creating a serious risk to their health.
Expressing their dismay during an inspection visit to the area by the governor’s aide, some of the residents threatened to go on protest if nothing was done to address the situation.
A resident, Becky Duabofa Bukuromo, lamented the continued environmental pollution, allegedly linked to King George’s Hotel and Shopping Mall.
Bukuromo noted that officials from the Ministry of Environment and the State Environmental Sanitation Authority had previously visited the area and made assurances.
According to her, after the promises no concrete steps have been taken to address the issue.
Other residents, including Mr. Ebi Alhaji and Mrs. Tari Buruboyefe, also shared their experiences.
They described the adverse effects of the pollution on their daily lives and calling for swift government action to restore a safe and healthy environment.
