FG Accelerates Efforts to Keep Nigerian’s Schools Safe

Federal Ministry of Education is continuing its partnership with Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to implement and enhance security initiative, as a key pillar of the new school protection strategy and deployment of smart, technology-based security solutions.

According to a statement made available to Newsmen, the initiatives include emergency panic alert systems and rapid response mechanisms aimed at significantly reducing response time during security breaches.

The new measures will be integrated into enhanced command and control security centres to enable swift, coordinated, and intelligence-driven responses and interventions.

”To make this strategy work seamlessly, both the Ministry of Education and the NSCDC have established dedicated organs within their systems to drive it. While the ministry is establishing a dedicated Department of Safe School Initiative, the (NSCDC) also, established specialised units of Safe Schools Protection Squad and a trained Female Squad that have already foiled threats to schools in different parts of the country.

”The ministry’s new department will serve as the central coordinating body for school safety policy, monitoring and inter-agency collaboration nationwide. It will work with the Safe Schools Protection Squad and other organs of the NSCDC to ensure the successful implementation of the new security strategy” The statement said.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Education, Dr Olatunji Alausa also announced the introduction of sustainable financing models that will insulate school protection efforts from irregular budgetary releases. He said the ministry is evolving innovative funding mechanisms that will guarantee dedicated, first-line support for the Safe School Initiative and ensure it’s consistent nationwide implementation.

Dr Alausa stated that the programme was designed to institutionalize safety as a permanent feature of the academic spaces, safeguarding students, teachers, and schools from attacks,.

”It is aimed at ensuring that, no child’s education is hindered by fear. Born out of the Chibok tragedy of 2014, as a response to critical security challenges, the Safe School Initiative has evolved into an effective multi-agency security venture. It is now a collaborative effort towards ensuring safe learning environments even in high-risk areas. The new Smart School Protection Strategy is another layer in that effort” he added.
