Gov. Fubara Flags Off Airport Bypass, Says Development Is Key to Peace

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, on Friday, December 12, 2025, inaugurated a major road infrastructure project aimed at ending community-induced disruptions at the Port Harcourt International Airport.

The governor flagged off construction of the 7.1km Airport–Ipo–Ikwerre Road Bypass and commissioned the newly completed 12.2km Ikwerre Road–Igwuruta–Airport Road in Ipo. The events were performed by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Chief Festus Keyamo, symbolising strengthened federal–state collaboration on key development projects.

Governor Fubara explained that the bypass is a direct response to persistent protests especially by the Ipo community which last year resulted in a blockade of the airport and drew national attention.

“About a year ago, this respected community protested and blocked the airport entrance. It was embarrassing, and the impression was that government wasn’t doing anything,” he said.

He noted that engagement with the community had led to the provision of a health centre and electricity, and that the new road would provide a lasting solution by reducing friction around the airport corridor.

“As soon as this road is completed, you will no longer need the old airport road. The old road will be tolled. If you have no business at the airport, the bypass is your route.”

Describing the project as an investment in peace, commerce, and security, the governor directed the contractor to deliver the bypass within eight months. He also commended the Aviation Ministry and airport authorities for advocating prompt commencement of construction.

During the event, Governor Fubara confirmed that he had received APC membership Form 001, pledging to rally Rivers people behind President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid. He expressed appreciation to the President for ongoing development efforts in the South-South.

Minister Keyamo said the project was a crucial intervention for the aviation sector, acknowledging delays in addressing community grievances. He formally welcomed Governor Fubara into the All Progressives Congress and expressed optimism that stronger federal–state ties would accelerate infrastructure delivery.

Permanent Secretary of the Rivers State Ministry of Works, Dr. Austin Ezekiel-Hart, said the completed 12.2km road forms the second phase of the Airport–Igwuruta dual carriageway. He added that the new 7.1km bypass will feature a 10.3m width, 1.5m concrete shoulders, solar-powered streetlights, and a modern tolling system.

Chairman of Ikwerre Local Government Area, Hon. Wobodo Charles, hailed the governor’s developmental strides, saying the bypass would open direct access from Ipo community to Ikwerre Road, reduce travel time, and stimulate economic growth along the corridor.
